Melvin De
Groote (1896–1963) was one of America's great unlauded inventors. At the
time of his death he held 925 patents. Time magazine's millennium issue
recognized him as second only to Thomas Edison in this regard. Most of
DeGroote's inventions were chemical demulsifiers used to treat crude
oil. Chemical demulsifiers separate water from crude oil coming out of
wells, a process that is necessary before raw petroleum can be refined
